Ann is studying how cells organize their DNA in the nucleus. The DNA is packaged into chromatin, but not all chromatin is created equal. Ann aims to understand how such differences in packaging are achieved, for instance by attaching chemical groups (epigenetic modifications) to chromatin proteins and by additional factors that bind to the chromatin and determine where and when the genetic information is expressed. Furthermore, she studies how such modifications are inherited from mother cells to daughter cells, when the DNA is duplicated. As a model organism, she uses baker’s yeast to investigate how chromatin packaging influences gene expression
