Frank studies the enzymes that mark DNA with methyl groups (DNA methyltransferases). When DNA gets abnormally methylated, like too much methylation at tumor suppressor genes, these genes can switch off, a feature often associated with the onset of human cancers. Frank's lab are looking at drugs to block the activity of enzymes that affect DNA methylation (DNA methyltransferase inhibitors). Such drugs are known to be beneficial in certain cancer patients.
