DNA within cells (other than bacteria) is wound around histone proteins making a densely coiled mass of stuff called chromatin. Genes only take effect via chromatin. Tom wants to know how chromatin structure changes the way our genes behave. In particular, he is looking at motor proteins that rearrange chromatin as well as the way tags on histone proteins affect the subunits of our chromosomes.
