How do mammals develop from an embryo to an adult and why does this sometimes go wrong? Anne studies how imprinted genes, genes switched on or off depending on whether they are inherited from mum or dad, affect development. If imprinted genes are inappropriately switched on or off, developmental defects can result. Anne is also interested in processes allowing the gene that is on to be distinguished from the same gene when it is off. By interfering with the on/off switch of imprinted genes on mouse chromosome 12, birth defects leading to embryonic lethality occur, helping Anne understand developmental gene functions.
