During the development of animals and plants, cell fate decisions are often made at a particular time point in development and cells then need to remember the chosen developmental programme for many cell generations. Polycomb group and Trithorax group proteins are at the heart of this process. In animals, they allow cells to remember their fate, while they allow plants to remember when it is time to flower. By studying how these proteins function, Jürg’s goal is to understand the molecular basis of the memory that permits cell fate decisions to be passed on from one cell generation to the next.
