Have you ever wondered why more men suffer from colour blindness than women? It’s due to the inequality of the sexes. Women have two X chromosomes while men have to make do with only one. Different organisms have developed different strategies to overcome this difference in sex chromosomes. Humans solve the problem by switching off one X chromosome in all female cells. In contrast, male fruit flies compensate for their one X chromosome by activating genes located on the X chromosome approximately 2-fold. Asifa works on proteins that enable male fruit flies to have a hyperactive X chromosome.
