To compensate for the fact that women have one more X chromosome in their cells than men, one X chromosome is randomly inactivated in female cells by being coated with an RNA molecule called Xist (exist). Edith is intrigued by how two identical X chromosomes in the same cell nucleus can have such different fates and she would like to know whether the location of the X chromosomes within the nucleus affects which of the two chromosomes is inactivated. She is also investigating whether Xist prevents proteins that turn on genes from accessing the inactive X chromosome.
