As cells contain many thousands of genes, controlling which genes are on and off in a cell is no easy task. In fact, hundreds of different proteins bind to DNA to regulate gene activity. Bas believes that to understand how this huge number of protein – DNA interactions controls gene activity, such interactions should be studied at the level of the whole genome. To this end, Bas has developed new technology for large-scale mapping of protein – DNA interactions in living cells. To interpret the vast amounts of data he generates, Bas is also developing advanced computer software.
